Why Visit Rwanda?
MOUNTAIN GORILLAS
Volcanoes National Park in Northern Rwanda is one of the best places in the world to see endangered mountain gorillas. Home to a portion of the remaining 1,004 mountain gorillas, it offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience for visitors on Rwanda safaris. Just a 2–3 hour drive from Kigali, this park is the most accessible gorilla trekking destination. A gorilla permit costs $1500 per person and can be obtained through a licensed tour operator or the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
National parks
Rwanda is home to four stunning national parks, each offering unique wildlife and landscapes. Volcanoes National Park is famous for mountain gorilla trekking and the Virunga volcanoes. Nyungwe Forest National Park shelters 13 primate species, including chimpanzees, and over 310 bird species. Akagera National Park features classic African safaris with the Big Five and diverse savanna wildlife. Gishwati-Mukura, Rwanda’s newest park, protects rare forest species and primates.

Lakes of Rwanda
Rwanda is home to stunning lakes that add serenity and beauty to any safari experience. Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes, lies along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and is perfect for relaxation and water activities. The Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, near Volcanoes National Park, offer breathtaking views and cultural encounters.
Other picturesque lakes include Lake Muhazi, Lake Mugesera, Lake Cyohoha, and Lake Rweru—each offering peaceful escapes, birdwatching, and a glimpse into Rwanda’s natural charm.
Historic Sites & Museums
Rwanda offers a rich blend of history, remembrance, and cultural heritage through its iconic historic sites and museums. A key part of any visit is exploring the Genocide Memorials, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Nyamata, Ntarama, Nyanza, Bisesero, and Nyarubuye, which honor the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and provide powerful insights into Rwanda’s past.
Beyond the memorials, Rwanda also celebrates its cultural and natural heritage through museums like the Ethnographic Museum in Huye, the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza, the Museum of Environment in Karongi, and the Campaign Against Genocide Museum in Kigali. These sites preserve Rwanda’s traditions, royal history, and resilience for generations to come.
